IS ANY PSYCHIATRIC NOSTALGIA JUSTIFIED ?
by Benjamin Merhav

I have downloaded the article below from
Dr Bob Johnson's website . He is a veteran British psychiatrist. He is not opposed to psychiatry, only to the way it has been practiced by his fellow shrinks, and to its alliance with Big Pharma. The earlier days of psychiatry, namely before 1980, seem to him better than at present, and he is therefore yearning to the "good old day" of past psychiatry.

However, already 50 years ago a book titled, The Myth of Mental Illness, by Dr. Thomas Szasz,MD, a veteran American professor of psychiatry , was published. A few other psychiatrists have formed the anti-psychiatry movement during that time too. They did not feel any nostalgia for any of the previous 600 years of psychiatry. The reasons for their rebellion against their own profession are plain to see. Firstly, psychiatry and its dogma are based on the fraud of "mental illness", rather than on science, therefore have nothing to do with medicine. The practice of psychiatry, based on coercion and violation of human rights, is a fascist practice, therefore a menace to humanity.

Yet, Dr. Bob Johnson, MD, is to be congratulated for telling the truth about the atrocities of present day psychiatry. We need more psychiatrists like him, and urgently.

psychiatry

Psychiatry since 1980 has lost its way. For 40 years it has been marching resolutely in the wrong direction, leaving the comforting shores of Therapeutic Communities, in which I was thankfully trained, for the wilder reaches of an imaginary micro-neurological mire.
DSM-III and then DSM-IV firmly led psychiatrists away from humanity into a fantastical nightmare of ever increasing drug toxicity, amid a rising global death rate from psychiatric disease, which currently exceeds that of obesity and cardiac disease combined, according to the WHO. Time for a change.
I’m a consultant psychiatrist, trained in 1963 in the ‘healing hand of kindness’. Contrary to best medical practice, all that matters now are symptoms – not where they come from, or how to cure them. A bizarre micro-neurology has been dreamt up, which is false. Powerful drugs are cause increasing damage, and since they pay zero attention to causes, can only impede cure. Emotions, especially fear, underlie every psychiatric problem – but orthodox psychiatry resolutely ignores them – with unsafe consequences.
There is a competent, humane and highly effective cure for mental disease – and has been for centuries. The ‘healing hand of kindness’ needs to be heard against the cacophony of drugs. Time we had a campaign . . . . .
